“Half Ticket” was a laugh riot featuring Kishore Kumar and Pran. The movie had a heroine too, but I am not able to recall her name, that is how Kishore and Pran centric this movie was. Pran would for ever be after Kishore Kumar much like cartoon characters Tom and Jerry ( or replace their names by any other set of cartoon characters).

While Pran is in hot pursuit of Kishore Kumar, the duo manage to sing a few songs as well. Here is a funny song. In this song, Kishore Kumar is dressed like a woman, and Pran is out to “woo” the woman. They sing this song in the process of wooing and getting wooed.

Kishore Kumar has given the playback not only for the the lady that he plays, but for the gentle (?)man Pran too. Normal Kishore Kumar voice is used to sing for Pran whereas Kishore Kumar employs a high pitched voice to sing for the “lady”.

Song-Aake seedhi lagi (Half Ticket) (1962) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Salil Chowdhary

Aake seedhi lagi dil pe jaise katariya

We all know that when Kishore Kumar acted in movies, he sang his own songs. Sometimes, Kishore Kumar would be dressed in drags, and even there he would provide the female playback himself ( viz. Aake seedhi lagi(Half Ticket)(1962).

On the other hand, there were exceptions, where the music director(s) made him to lip sync in other singers voice. I can count the names of Rafi and Manna Dey as the singers who have sung for Kishore Kumar in Hindi movies.

Can one think of any other singers who have given playback for Kishore Kumar ? Now I can, and it is a rather unusual name to sing for Kishore Kumar.

Here is this song from the laugh riot “Baap Re Baap”(1955) where Kishore Kumar is dressed like a woman and sings this song in a bid to amuse Smriti Biswas .
I hope it is Smriti Biswas and not Chand Usmani (you know how I am when it comes to identifying female actors of 1950s), who seems like she is married to Kishore Kumar and is unhappy about something. Kishore Kumar’s antics, singing and dancing like a female, makes her smile (which she tries very hard to suppress) but finally it finally becomes too much for her to maintain a straight face and she finally bursts out laughing.

This song is sung by, of all singers, Asha Bhonsle !

So here is a good trivia question to ask in a quiz programme, viz. Which of these singers has sung a song for Kishore Kumar in a Hindi movie (a) Lata (b) Asha Bhonsle (c) Shamshad Begam (d) Suman Kalyanpur

In case you hear this question in a quiz programme, you know from where they have copied this question. :D

This song, which is picturised on Kishore Kumar and Smriti Biswas (assuming that it is Smriti Biswas) is written by Jaan Nissar Akhtar. O P Nayyar is the music director.
PS-The lady is Chaand Usmani, as informed by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh.

Song-Jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa (Baap Re Baap) (1955) Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Jaan Nissar Akhtar, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa
jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa

aankhon ka raat haseen hai
dekh mujhe hosh nahin hai
aankhon ka raat haseen hai
dekh mujhe hosh nahin hai
dil na dukhaa jiyaa na jalaa
yoon na sataa paas to aa
jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa

dekh meri naazuk haal
teri adaa maar na daale
dekh meri naazuk haal
teri adaa maar na daale
dil na dukhaa
jiyaa na jalaa
yoon na sataa
paas to aa
jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa

aaj tera saath milaa hai
saaraa jahaan jhoom uthaa hai
aaj tera saath milaa hai
saaraa jahaan jhoom uthaa hai
labon pe hansi
chaayi hai khushi
main hoon wahi tu hai wahi
jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa
jaane bhi de chhod ye bahaanaa
tere liye jeena hai deewaana
rut hai jawaan pyaar kar
yahi to hai pyaar ka zamaanaa

When it comes to Shammi Kapoor, the popular image of him is as a suave gentleman who romances his ladies by singing great songs in Rafi’s voice. But I have realised that it is only part of the larger picture.

For one Shammi Kapoor does not always play a suave gentleman. He has also played ghastly looking woman, like for instance in “Kashmir Ki Kali”(1964) where he plays Anoop Kumar’s hefty burqa clad wife and sings Subhan Allah haseen chehra(Kashmir ki kali), in Rafi’s voice, of course.

But Shammi Kapoor has not always sung in Rafi’s voice. In addition to Rafi, I have seen Shammi Kapoor singing in the voices of Talat Mehmood, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar and even himself. In fact, Shammi Kapoor has not limited himself just to male voices- he has also sung in a female voice. Here is the evidence( Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali (Bluffmaster)), where a ghastly looking looking cross dressing Shammi Kapoor sings in Shamshad Begam’s voice.

If you think you have seen it all with Shammi Kapoor, then wait. You may have seen him romancing petite ladies like Saira Bano,Sharmila Tagore,Mala Sinha, Kalpana, Amita etc, but that is not all.Shammi Kapoor has even romanced a hefty salwar kurta clad Mehmood ! Yes, our Shammi Kapoor is quite an allrounder in these matters, it would appear.

Here is Shammi Kapoor romancing Mehmood in this song from ‘Dil Tera Deewaana” (1962). The song is sung by Rafi. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and music is composed by Shankar HJaikishan.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Peevesie’s mom.

Song-Dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naam se (Dil Tera Deewaana)(1962) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hasrat Jaipuri, MD-Shankar Jaikishan

Lyrics(Provided by Peevesie’s mom)

bow! bow wow!
bow! bow wow!

Dhadakne lagta hai
mera dil tere naam se
dhadakne lagta hai
mera dil tere naam se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se
dhadakne lagta hai
mera dil tere naam se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se

Bow! Bow Wow!
Bow! Bow Wow!

mere dil mein jabse toota
tere nain ka teer
dil mein rehkar ban gaya woh toh
teri hi tasveer
neend nahin aati hai mujhko aaram se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se
dhadakne lagta hai
mera dil tere naam se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se

Bow! Bow Wow!
Bow! Bow Wow!

teri baaten tere kisse
rehte hain hardum
mehfil ho ya veeraana ho
ya koyi mausam
darte nahin hain hum
ishq ke anjaam se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se
dhadakne lagta hai
mera dil tere naam se
aisa lagta hain ke ab hum
gaye kaam se
dha dha dha dha
dhadakne lagta hai mera dil tere naam se
aisa lagta hai ke ab hum
gaye kaam se

“Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya”(1966) was a Rawal Films Production movie. This movie was produced by B L Rawal and directed by C L Rawal. The lyrics of this song were written by G L Rawal. The movie boasted of some big names in its starcast, viz. Dharmendra,Nutan, Rehman, Bela Bose, Laxmi Chhaya, I.S.Johar, Mumtaz Begum, Jeevan, Randhir, Sunder, TunTun, Niranjan Sharma, Ravikant, JeevanKala, Madhumati, Pal Sharma, Brahm Bhardwaj etc in it. The story line of the movie unfortunately was meant to appeal to masochists and their numbers were dwindling among movie goers. As a result this movie failed at the box office.

The music of this movie was in a league of its own, though. Sonik Omi, erstwhile assistants to other music directors (such as Madan Mohan) made a stunning debut as full fledged music directors with this movie.

One can safely state that the songs of this movie were better heard than watched. In case one insisted on watching the songs as well, then it was advisable to watch only the songs in isolation, instead of going through the torture of watching the entire movie.

As many as six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh song from the movie. This song is picturised as a supposedly comedy song in the sense that Jeewan is shown wooing a cross dressing I S Johar in the picturisation, mistaking him for a female. The song is sung by Rafi and a female voice which could be I S Johar’s voice, though I am not sure.

This is one of the few songs which is lip synced by Jeevan. The lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra meant to be posted on the occasion of Jeevan’s death anniversary which was yesterday (10 june). I was unable to discuss this song at that time. Here is this seventh song from “Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya” (1966). This song is as melodious to listen to as the other songs from the movie.

Song-Yoon chaal chalo na matwaali (Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya)(1966) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-G L Rawal, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics(Provided by Prakashchandra)

yoon chaal chalo na matwaali
iss dil pe qayaamat aati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali
iss dil pe qayaamat aati hai
naagan ko bhi dhokhaa hotaa hai
jab teri kamar
haayye haaye
jab teri kamar bal khaati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali

(dialogues)
suniye toh
bahut garmee hai
chhodo naa
ye kyaa kar rahe ho ?

shaanon pe giraa do zulfon ko
do pahar ki garmi kaa shai hai
shaanon pe giraa do zulfon ko
dopahar ki garmi kaa shai hai
sooraj pe siyaahi chaa jaaye
jab zulf teri
taubaa taubaa
jab zulf teri lehraati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali
iss dil pe qayaamat aati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali

(laughing sound-“sab jhoot” -dialogue)

yoon ham pe hansnaa theek nahin
duniyaa ki nazar lag jaayegi
yoon ham pe hansnaa theek nahin
duniyaa ki nazar lag jaayegi
koyee phool samajhkar chhoom na le
jab teri hansee
waah waah
jab teri hansee khil jaati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali
iss dil pe qayaamat aati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali

(lo nahin hansti-dialogue)

qurbaan nahin ke kehne par
aisse hi zubaan se haan keh do
qurbaan nahin ke kehne par
aisse hi zubaan se haan keh do
chhotaa saa ye lafz-e-mohabbat hai
tassqeen badi
allaah
tassqeen badi mil jaati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali
iss dil pe qayaamat aati hai
naagan ko bhi dhokhaa hotaa hai
jab teri kamar
hoyye hoyye hoyye hoyye
jab teri kamar bal khaati hai
yoon chaal chalo na matwaali

While researching Shammi Kapoor’s songs, I was interested to find out who, apart from Rafi, had given playback singing for Shammi Kapoor. I came across a few songs sung by Manna Dey and Mukesh. May be I may find songs sung by a few more male playback singers.

As often happens with me, song farmaishes often are learning experiences for me. I thought that this song must be a Rafi song, similar to the other “husn chala” song. But it turns out that this “chali chali” song is vastly different from the “husn chala” song. This “chali chali” song is a qawwali, and what is more, Shammi Kapoor sings in a totally unexpected voice here-viz in the voice of Shamshad Begum ! Yes, Shammi Kapoor is seen cross dressing here ( this term was not in existence those days, though) and I recall three of Shammi fans sending their farmaishes for songs featuring Shammi Kapoor in drags. So here is the song where Shammi Kapoor is seen masquerading as a female, and a very hefty one too.

Song-Oy chali chali kaisi ye hawa chali (Bluffmaster) (1963) Singer-Shamshad Begum, Usha Mangeshkar,Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali

Munh se inkaar jo ye karte hain
saaf zaahir hai ham pe marte hain
Munh se inkaar jo ye karte hain
saaf zaahir hai ham pe marte hain
daag chupta nahin chhupaane se
aur machlega dil dabaane se
aaa agar machlega ye dil to
hamen samjhaana aata hai
aaa agar machlega ye dil to
hamen samjhaana aata hai
ke ek bhoole huye ko raah par bhi laana aata hai

Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali

dil lagaane ko khel kahte ho
kis jahaan me huzoor rahte ho
dil lagaane ko khel kahte ho
kis jahaan me huzoor rahte ho
ishq ki baat aur hoti hai
dil dhadakta hai aankh roti hai
O samajhte ho hamen kya
ham nahin hain rone walon me
samajhte ho hamen kya
ham nahin hain rone walon me
kisi se pyaar karke
ham to hain khush hone waalon me
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
oy jali jali kaliyon ki kismat jali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali
ke lagtin hain bhanwron ki soorat bhali
Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
ke bhawre pe marne lagi hai kali
ke bhawre pe marne lagi hai kali

hamne qaatil tumhe banaaya hai
ishq ka raasta dikhaaya hai
hamne qaatil tumhe banaaya hai
ishq ka raasta dikhaaya hai
tum muhabbat hamen sikhaate ho
aaj aankhen hamen dikhaate ho
aaa muhabbat ho agar sachchi
jubaan khaamosh rahti hai
muhabbat ho agar sachchi
jubaan khaamosh rahti hai
ye hai wo shama jo
khaamosh me ruposh rahti hai
Oy chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
chali chali kaisi hawa ye chali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali
ke bhanwre pe marne lagi hai kali

O what sort of wind is this blowing
O what sort of wind is this blowing
That the flower is now falling for the bee
That the flower is now falling for the bee
O is this now the fate of the flower
O is this now the fate of the flower
That even the bee has started looking attractive
That even the bee has started looking attractive

On their lips these people have denial
But it is clear that they actually love me
On their lips these people have denial
But it is clear that they actually love me
You cannot hide a blemish
It will only get more visible if you try to suppress it
And if this heart gets more excited
I know how to handle it
And if this heart gets more excited
I know how to handle it
For I know how to bring back on track somebody gone astray

O what sort of wind is this blowing
O what sort of wind is this blowing
That the flower is now falling for the bee
That the flower is now falling for the bee
O is this now the fate of the flower
O is this now the fate of the flower
That even the bee has started looking attractive
That even the bee has started looking attractive

You call this matter of love just a game
In which world do you live my lord
You call this matter of love just a game
In which world do you live my lord
The matter of love is something entirely different
The heart pounds wildly, there are tears in the eyes
O what do you think of me
I am not one to shed tears
O what do you think of me
I am not one to shed tears
I am one who falls in love
And then seeks happiness in that love

O what sort of wind is this blowing
O what sort of wind is this blowing
That the flower is now falling for the bee
That the flower is now falling for the bee
O is this now the fate of the flower
O is this now the fate of the flower
That even the bee has started looking attractive
That even the bee has started looking attractive

I have made you a killer
I have shown you the way to love
I have made you a killer
I have shown you the way to love
You are teaching me love
You are daring to look me in the eye
If love is indeed true
Then there is only silence on the lips
If love is indeed true
Then there is only silence on the lips
This is that flame
That burns away in silence

O what sort of wind is this blowing
O what sort of wind is this blowing
That the flower is now falling for the bee
That the flower is now falling for the bee
O is this now the fate of the flower
O is this now the fate of the flower
That even the bee has started looking attractive
That even the bee has started looking attractive

“Akalmand” (1966) was directed by Roop K Shorey for Mukul Pictures. The movie had I. S. Johar, Kishore Kumar, Sonia Sahni, Parveen Choudhary, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Khurshid etc in it.

Five songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the sixth song from the movie. This song is a duet which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Shamshad Begam. Aziz Kashmiri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Picturisation of this song reveal ths song to be a disguise cum cross dressing song in a villain’s den setting. Kishore Kumar and I S Johar have disguised themselves as a pair of female dancers who perform this dance. Their identity is revealed only towards the end of the song when their fake wigs fall off.

“Chhoomantar”(1956) was produced and directed by M Sadiq. The movie had Johny Walker and Shyama in lead roles. Others in the movie include Karan Dewan, Anita Guha, Raj Mehra, Gajanan Jagirdar, Amar, S N Bannerji, Tony Walker etc in it.

Today (16 january 2015) is the 89th birth anniversary of O P Nayyar (16 january 1926-28 january 2007). Here is a song from “Chhoomantar”(1956) on this occasion.

This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. The picturisation shows Johny Walker, cross dressing as a female, performs Mujra on this song. His clients think that Johny Walker is singing too, but it is Shyama, hiding a a distance, who is “singing” for Johny Walker the way Kishore Kumar sings for Sunil Dutt in “Padosan”(1968). And the clients of Johny Walker, being villain’s henchmen, are suitably dumb and are unable to detect the things that are amiss.

Geeta Dutt is the singer. Jaan Nisaar Akhtar is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

Song-Gori gori raat hai taaron ki baaraat hai (Chhoomantar)(1956) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Jaan Nisaar Akhtar, MD-O P Nayyar

aisi bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai
taaron ki baaraat hai

aise mein toote na aas tere deewaanon ki
dekho ji

aise mein toote na aas tere deewaanon ki
aaja

aisi bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai
taaron ki baaraat hai
aaja ho aaja
aisi bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai

tere bina koi kya raaz hamaara jaanega
badli hai soorat bhi
kaun hamen pehchaanega
tere bina koi kya

badli hai surat bhi
kaun hamen pehchaanega
aaja ho aaja
aisi bhi kya baat hai

aisi bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai

aise bhi waise bhi
dekh zamaana jalta hai
ikdam tikdam agdam bagdam
pyaar mein sab kuchh chalta hai
aise bhi waise bhi
dekh zamaana jalta hai
ikdam tikdam agdam bagdam
pyaar mein sab kuch chalta hai
aaja ho aaja
aise bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai
taaron ki baaraat hai
aaja ho aaja
aisi bhi kya baat hai
gori gori raat hai

“Pyaar Ka Saagar”(1961) was produced and directed by Devendra Goel. The movie had Meena Kumari, Rajendra Kumar,Madanpuri, Malika, Mohan Choti, O.P.Ralhan(Introducing), Leela Misra, S.K.Prem, Shah, Jagdish Raj, Nazir Kashmiri, Abhimanyu Sharma(New face) etc in it.

Today (3 march) is the birth anniversary of Ravi. Here is a song from “Pyaar Ka Saagar”(1961) on this occasion.

This song is supposed to be a light hearted comedy song. The situation is that O P Ralhan is unable to meet his beloved (Malika) because of her strict father who always carries a loaded gun with him. O P Ralhan cross dresses and manages to get entry in the household of Malika, right under the nose of her father. But her father makes him to sing a song. Left with no choice, O P Ralhan lip syncs this song is a disguised voice, which happens to be Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Towards the end of the song, he momentarily lets his guard down and lip syncs a few words in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice before wuickly covering up and resuming in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. That lapse is enough to create doubt in the minds of Malika’s father though. and as we notice in the picturisation, the disguise of O P ralhan comes off just as the song is coming to a close.

HFGK credits Asha Bhonsle as the singer of this song. It appears that some sites credit Mahendra Kapoor too for uttereing a few words.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ravi.

Today (4 september) is Rishi Kapoor’s birthday. It appears only yesterday that he made his debut as a teenage hero in “Bobby” (1973). But in reality that was 39 years ago ! How time has flown! Now it is his son who is a teenage heartthrob and Rishi Kapoor these days plays old man’s roles.

My image of Rishi Kapoor’s films are light hearted non serious movies where he would romance Neetu Singh. And that was easy because the two were in fact love birds. Carrying out romance in front of movie cameras and getting paid for that- what a life it must have been !🙂

On the occasion of Rishi Kapoor’s birthday, here is a song from “Rafoo Chakkar” (1975) which in a way is a decent enough illustration of the kind of light hearted non serious roles that he used to play in Hindi movies.

The picturisation shows Rishi Kapoor and Paintal cross dressing and travelling in the company of girls in a train. Not content with merely posing as girls, they burst into a song too, in the voice of Asha Bhonsle and Usha Mangeshkar !

Here is this song from “Rafoo Chakkar” (1975) which also has a line sung by Mahesh Kumar and severaal lines sung by the chorus as well. The song is picturised on Rishi Kapoor, paintal, Neetu Singh, Faryal, Asrani etc.

Today’s song is from the film Hatimtai-56.

Among older generations, reading books, novels etc, other than the school Text books, was considered a gateway to general knowledge and an aid to develop an impressive personality. As times changed, I think this habit has diminished with every new generation and today I find that students do not read anything ( not even Newspapers-except sports and films section) other than school or college syllabus and Guide books. Their general knowledge is below par in most cases. I do not blame them, because the education system in our country has been modelled on such lines that students will only read what brings them more marks. Nothing else. They have no time left for general reading due to college and classes. Additionally parents too encourage only this – not general reading…out of helplessness ! Of course their intelligence and skills have not diminished but have different openings suitable for today’s life-struggle.

The point is what we have read in our younger days as a child and teenager,is still in our memory- the exciting world of Arabian Nights, Gulliver, Time machine, Chandamama and stories from Mythology. Later on Crime and Detective stories and for Girls-Mills and Boon ! The marvellous world of Alladin and Alibaba was so enchanting ! One of these Arabian Night stories was that of HATIMTAI.

Initially,I had got confused with this name, because Tai in Marathi means elder sister or Didi, but soon it was clear that Hatimtai was very much a Male. Like Alladin and Alibaba, Hatimtai also attracted Hindi film makers. Right from the beginning of the Talkie films in 1932, films were made on the exploits and adventures of Hatimtai, to solve the 7 Sawaals or questions asked by Husn Bano !

In 1933, 4 films-as a series- in the same year were made in the name of Hatimtai-Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV. These were separate films and adventures for those 7 questions were divided in these 4 parts. All the 4 films had One Hero-Marutirao Pehelwan. He was a tall and handsome person. He is the same actor who did the Title role of the Saint Narsi Mehta, in the First ever Gujarati Talkie film of the same name-Narsi Mehta. It was made by Sagar Movietone.

All the 4 films were Directed by G.R.Sethi- who also wrote all the 49 songs of these all films, which were tuned by composer Madholal Master. Hatimtai Part I has also the honour of having India’s First “Anokhe Bol ” song. The words of this song were “Donga Donga Dam Dam Daka, Adam,Boka Masnam Maka “. marutirao pehelwan married his co-star of many films- Tara ( she was not in Hatimtai). Tara was famous Dancer Sitara Devi’s sister. The world Famous Dancer Gopi Krishna was their son.

Films with the name Hatimtai were made in 1933,1947,1956 and 1990.
Hatimtai-7 sawaal in 1971
Hatimtai ka beta in 1945,1956 and 1965
Hatimtai ki Beti in 1940 and 1955

The original story of Hatim tai in Arabian Nights, never mentioned about his son or daughter, but our Hindi film makers are very creative and original. Their “Story Departments “produced his Son and Daughter form their Magic Sac- just like the sons, daughters and other close relatives were invented for Alibaba, Alladin, Gulliver, Sindbad, Tarzan and Zimbo ! There was even a Movie with the Title ”Sindbad, Alladin and Alibaba ” in 1965 !!

Today’s film Hatimtai-56 was made by Homi Wadia, under his Basant pictures banner. He was also the Director of this film. Homi Wadia is the same person who married Fearless Nadia, when she was 51 year old !

S.N.Tripathi was the composer of this Fantasy film He had also acted in the film. As such he was the favourite of Wadia Brothers. He had done the role of Hanuman in their popular film “Shri Rambhakta Hanuman “, besides composing the Music and also singing few songs. The Mythological films of Wadia Brothers were very popular in Middle East and in Pakistan area-before Partition. However, after the Partition, there was resistance for the Hindu Religious films in Muslim countries. Homi Wadia changed the Title of the film “Shri Rambhakta Hanuman ” to “udata Bandar ” ( उडता बंदर ), dubbed it in Urdu and exported the same film to Pakistan and the Middle East. It was a roaring success there !

The film Hatimtai-56 had 9 songs. It had some very good songs. One of the most popular songs of the times was one sung by Mohd. Rafi- “Parwar Digar E Alam, tera hi hai sahara . This song can be called a Cult song. It was extremely popular among devout Muslims. Most Irani hotels in India used to start their day with this song played loudly. Akhtar Romani had written this song, making a Debut in Hindi films. This was his only song in the film and it achieved unprecedented fame.

Actor Jairaj had done the main role of Hatimtai. He hailed from Hyderabad State. When this film was being shown in Hyderabad, Nawab Samsher Jung Bahadur of Hyderabad Riyasat was curious to see his film, with family and others. The film was screened in Zamrrud mahal Talkies on Abids Road in Hyderabad. Ana entire show was booked for him. The Nawab arrived to see the film, with his Zanana and family. When the song “Parvar Digar E Alam” started, he was simply mesmerised and he made the operator to play this song six times ! Next day, local papers carried this story and hordes of people rushed to see the film. The film celebrated Silver jubilee there !

Other songs were sung by Asha Bhonsle, Shamshad Begum, Suman Kalyanpur and Mubarak Begum. Today’s song “Uyi amma main kaahe ko baazaar gayi thhi” was a fun song sung by comedy actor Sheikh, in a Drag dress, The song and dance video of this song is very funny indeed.

Sheikh was a Comedy actor in the 40s,50s and the 60s. He has acted in 170 films, as per Muvyz stats. He sang 10 songs in 7 films as per HFGK (Daulat ki duniya-47, Fifty Fifty-UR, Nakli Baap-49, Jiya Raja-49, Dushman-50, Hatimtai-56 and Naagmani-57).

He was essentially a B and C grade films comedian, so his name is not known to most people. Sanjeev Narvekar’s book, “Eena meena deeka” gives very little information about him. In his hey-days, he was popular in a class of people who were regulars of stunt, fantasy and action films. He was a fixture in almost all Wadia films. He was the main lip syncer in the iconic qawwaali, “Humen to loot liya milke husnwalon ne” from film Al Hilal-58. This song featured on this Blog as its 5000th song, with a combined write up of Raja ji, Sudhir ji and Atul ji. Probably he is the only actor to get this honour in the blog!

He had directed two films, Shahnaaz-48 and Mr.Toofan-63. He started his career in Hindi films with Pakke badmash-39. Before that he had acted in a Marathi film “Netaji palkar-39″by Bhalji Pendharkar (info from CITWF). His last film was Aadamkhor-85. No information is available on his life anywhere.

I will not repeat the film story because I had given it in 2011 in comments of another song from this film. Enjoy this song video by Sheikh, who makes his Debut as a Singer on this Blog.

I was under the impression that “Johar Mehmood in Goa”(1965) was YIPPEED with the last song that was discussed in the blog. Now it turns out that I had incorrectly assumed that song as a multiple version song and that a song from the movie was actually left to be discussed.

So here is this missing fsong from “Johar Mehmood in Goa”(1965). This song is sung by Kamal Barot, Shamsdhad Begma and chorus. Akhtar Romani is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

The song is picturised as a villain’s den song cum disguise song. The song becomes innocuously enough as we see a young Simi Garewal lip syncing in Kamal Barot’s voice in a gathering of Portuguese rulers, protected by lots of security men. The next thing we see is that I S Johar and then Mehmood turn up, disguised as female dancers and lip syncing in the voices of Shamshad Begam and Kamal Barot respectively. The movie watchers are intelligent enough to see through the disguise but the Portuguese people are fooled of course. And then the accomplices of our cross dressing heroes easily kill poff the security men one by one, and replacing them with their cut outs, and none of the Portuguese big wigs notices anything amiss, of course.

This archtypically I S Johar brand picturisation of this song can be enjoyed only if one suspends one’s sense of disbelief, of course.

With this song, “Johar Mehmood in Goa”(1965) finally has all its songs covered in the blog. With this song, “Johar Mehmood in Goa”(1965) joins the listof movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Blog Day :

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Back to writing after a break and am having a problem trying to get my thoughts in order. These last few days I have made a few posts mentally and here I am trying to write about one of my favourite actors who would have turned 99 today.

The year 1972 saw a new genre of films wherein two actors who were past their prime – 61 and 52 was definitely not the age where actors play college students or young characters- were playing the central characters in a movie where the lead actor or the supposed- hero played second fiddle to these two. I am talking of Victoria No 203 by Brij Sadanah. Brij himself made another movie a few years later “Chori Mera Kaam” with these two seniors playing central characters. I am talking of an all-time favourite Jodi of cinelovers – Ashok Kumar and Pran.

S. K. Kapur was another producer -director who made this Jodi the centre of his stories in the moves of 70s and early 80s – Apna Khoon, Shankar Dada, Durga, Maan Gaye Ustaad. But the best tribute to the lovable Jodi was Kapur’s movie “Raja Aur Rana” – it didn’t have a regular actor playing the hero. Puneet Issar made his debut in this movie and was supposed to be a hero but “Raja aur Rana” was essentially Ashok Kumar- Pran all over. They did every antic that they were famous for from the time “Victoria No 203” became a success.

Before I go any further let me clarify one thing- Ashok Kumar and Pran did not team up for the first time in “Victoria No 203”; they have been cast together in movies since the 50s or even before that. Back then they used to play serious characters, mostly the protagonist and the antagonist. “Victoria No 203” changed all that. We saw the comic timing of these two senior actors.

I need to clarify one more thing- both these actors have performed in song situations through their career but post “Victoria 203” that also changed. The ability of these two to switch from insane characters of Raja and Rana can be gauged from the fact that about the same time Ashok Kumar played the grandfather in “Anuraag” and Pran was the grandfather in “Parichay”; Pransaab (as he used to be addressed) also played a regular cigar munching villain in “Roop Tera Mastana” that year. Such great actors and trailblazers – there are no replacements for them only actors who are inspired by them and aspire to be like them.

Today I bring to the blog a song from S. K. Kapur produced and Shibu Mitra directed “Raja Aur Rana”. The cast included Ajit, Shakti Kapoor, Puneet Issar, Madhu Malhotra, Chand Usmani, Aaloka etc etc supporting Ashok Kumar and Pran (Pran was always billed in the credits of movies as “And Pran”).

I have not seen the movie but I fell in love with this super Jodi all over again when I accidentally saw this song a few months back. We have Pransaab cross-dressing in this song and Shakti Kapoor and his henchmen playing the peeping- toms on the “loving couple”. The song was written by Varma Malik and Bappi Lahiri was the music director. We have Kishore Kumar singing for Ashok Kumar and Mahesh Kumar singing for Pransaab – the female voice belongs to Mahesh Kumar about whom our in-house encyclopaedia had written a few lines in a post of his. The post contained a song sung by Mahesh Kumar in dual voice, it seems he could sing in 32 voices.

This is such a cute husband-wife exchange with which we remember the adorable Pransaab on his 99th Birth anniversary.

I would also like to wish a fellow Atulite on his birthday today with lots of fun and music in his life. All the best to Avinashji on his birthday.

Song-Aji sunte ho (Raja Aur Rana)(1983) Singers-Mahesh Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Verma Malik, MD-Bappi Lahiri
Both

Lyrics

haaye haaye
haaye haaye haaye
aji sunte ho
o aji sunte ho
haan sunta hoon
aji sunte ho
lekar tum akhbaar ka panna
race ke ghode ginte ho
o aji sunte ho
koi vaid bulaao
koi doctor laao
hakeem mangaao
aji sunte ho

mujhe nauwaan lagaa hai
ik dard jagaa hai
haaye yahaan se uthha
aur yahaan gayaa hai
shaadi na hoti
main aaj na roti
dulhan na banti
bacche na janti
zaalim ye mahina
mera dhadke hai seena
tu dekh le apna
ye kaarnaama
kyun mujhe phansaaya
kar kar ke drama
ki toone mujhse
kartoot hai koi
tu mard nahin hai
jinn bhoot hai koi
o aji sunte ho
o aji sunte ho
haan sunta hoon

oye
ab kyun roti hai meri dulhan
pyaari tumhen yaad nahi aati
ab kyun roti hai meri dulhan
pyaari tumhen yaad nahin aati
woh baatein saari
har roz tu kehti
mujhe sair kara de
mujhe ticket manga de
mujhe film dikha de
chal India gate mein
zara ghoom ke aayen
aur Tajmahal mein
hum khaana khaayen
tu surkhi laali
powder bhi lagaati
aur daal ke surma
tu teer chalaati
tu karke fashion
har roz aa jaati
aur kehti le chal
mujhe Juhu Chowpati
wahaan paani puri
tu khoob udaati
kabhi idli dosa
kabhi kulfi khaati
main ho gaya kadka
palle nahin paayi
tera sair sapaata
kha gaya kamaayi
o bhool gayi tu
jab maze udaati
ab dard uthha toh
phir kyun chillaati
main sunta hoon
jeb mein kitne paise reh gaye
baitha baitha ginta hoon
main sunta hoon

munnu ke paapa
tera karoon siyaapa
mujhe hichki aaye (hitchki)
mera ji machlaaye (hitchki)
mujhe saans na aaye (hitchki)
mera sar chakraaye
mera munh bedardi
kya halaat kar di
main baithhi baithhi
khaaun hichkaule
koi amma amma
ander se bole
tu roz yeh kehta
ke munda hoga
agar tujhpe gaya woh
koi gunda hoga
main aath maheene
mushqil se bitaaye
tu pyaqr se ek din
nahin poochhne aaye
o aji sunte ho
koi vaidh bulaao
koi doctor laao
hakeem mangao
o aji sunte ho

kyon taane deti
sapnon ki raani
tere dushman mar jaayen
teri jiye jawaani
pehla aur dooja
kab tumhen laga thha
na tujhko khabar thhi
na mujhko pata thha
phir teeje maheene
meri khench rajaai
toone aadhi raat ko
khushkhabri sunaai
aur chauthhe paanchve
jab tu ghabraai
aur chhathe maheene
tujhe ulti aayi
main bhaag ke aaya
tujhe paass bulaaya
tujhe maalish ki thi
tujhe tel lagaaya
chhodo ab gussa
aa tujhe sula doon
tu thhak chuki hai
tere paanv daba doon
hai hai hai hai hai hai hai hai

biwi ke har koi (some sound by Ashok Kumar)
hai paanv dabaata
tu tel lagaake
ehsaan jataata
kis baat ke liye
phir tu akadta
gharwaala hoke
mere sar pe chadhta
aurat ka farz hai
bacchon ko janna
koi toone anokha
nahin kaam ye karna

mere paass na aana
batti na bujhaana
mujhe seeti bajaa ke
nahin kabhi bulana
meri tauba tauba
kaanon ko pakdoon
hai meri galti
main naak bhi ragdoon

jhaado na bhaashan
ka milta ration
hai ye situation
karwaao operation
dono nasbandi
chal kar karwaayen
kyun apne desh ki
aabaadi badhaayen

is mehangaai mein
ek baccha kaafi
aage se tauba
aage se maafi
aage se tauba
aage se maafi
aage se tauba
aage se maafi

Gori sharmaao na hum se keh do zara

2553 Iss duniyaa mein pyaare do kaam karnaa Debut on this date exactly ten years ago
2573 Pehloo mein yaar ho to kis baat ki kami hai
12981 Arre bhai shrimaanji

As can be observed, “Shrimaanjee”(1968) made its debut on this ten years ago. Today offers us an opportunity of “Blog Ten Year Challenge” for this movie. Prakashchandra has sent me lyrics of all the three remaining songs from the movie.

Today, I have chosen a song that is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kamal Barot. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The picturisation is a comical Wedding dance song in drags. A fake wedding is taking place and a wedding ceremony dance song is performed, purportedly by two female dancers. One can see that one of the “female” dancer is I S Johar. 🙂 The other dancer is Meena Roy (I guess). The married couple are also fake, with a male playing the dulhan. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify them.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 133 # Remembering Shamshad Begam#
——————————————-————————————————-—
Shamshad Begam sings for Mehmood 😊
——————————————

Today 23rd April’2021 is the eighth remembrance anniversary (14th April 1919 – 23rd April-2013) of yesteryears’ singer Shamshad Begam. One who Naushad always mentioned as ‘a perfect Hindustani voice’.

On this occasion here is a song from the 1971 movie ‘Johar Mehmood In Hong Kong’. I had watched this movie in my childhood with my Uncle and have mentioned it in my earlier post on the blog.

Few songs like ‘jalti hai duniya jalti rahe’, ‘aayo aayo nau-raatri tyohaar’ have always been in my memory since my childhood. Also, the today’s song is one special song which I have never forgotten because on screen it is performed by a ‘beautiful female artist’ (in disguise though 😊)
I often break up in humming this today’s song whenever I am in ‘ Mehmood – mood’ 😊.

It is surprising that today’s song has been missing from the ‘blog’ till now.

Let us have a brief about the movie, before we enjoy the today’s ‘entertaining song’ …

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong” (1971) was produced by Madan Chopra and K.Z. Sheth. It was directed by S.A. Akbar and was presented by M.O. Bawazir for Mahesh Ashish. The movie had I.S. Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Irani, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Madhumati, Haroon, and Pran. Agha, Mukri, Jr. Mehmood, Polson, Shaikh, B.B. Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khairati, Murad appear as Guest Artistes in this movie.

This movie was written by I.S. Johar who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this movie. Vithal Bankar was the editor for this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.01.1971. And thus, this movie has already completed its FIFTY years since its release. I am sure many of us might have fond memories and nostalgia of watching this movie and might be remembering its songs too.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji who were assisted by Babla and where Parte was the arranger and Frank Fernand the Conductor.

There were Six songs in this movie penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (four songs) and two songs are jointly credited to Qamar Jalalabadi and Indeevar (as per HFGK).

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Manna Dey and Usha Timothi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. As per HFGK Lakshmi Shankar, Usha Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice has been in one song each, however their names are not mentioned in the titles of this movie (available on YT).

So far three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Today’s song is the fourth song of this movie to appear on the blog.

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Tumhaare dil ko ulfat ka Laxmi Shankar, Usha Timothy, chorus 29.12.2012
02 Nathaniyaa haale to badaa mazaa hoye Shamshad Begam Being discussed today
03 Jalti hai duniyaa jalti rahe Mukesh, Usha Khanna, chorus 30.06.2012
04 Ham to tere hai deewaane Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey
05 Laagaa laagaa jhulaniyaa ka dhakka Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar
06 Aayo aayo nau-raatri tyohaar Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Chorus 10.10.2018

Let us now enjoy today’s song which is performed on screen by Mehmood and we can also see I.S. Johar in the picturisation of the song. Watching this song one can easily guess what Mehmood (in female role) is trying to and what ‘her’ objective i. 😊

# Superstar Child Artist – Junior Mehmood # 8
——————————————————–

Welcome all to this eighth post in this series where we are discussing songs performed by Junior Mehmood as a ‘superstar child artist’.

So far, the following seven songs in this series have been discussed on the blog earlier.

1) lagey koi lottery koi jackpot lagey

2) Na koi paisa na ilm banaao bambai mein film

3) Mera naam hai Mehmood

4) Birha ki rain sooni sooni sejariya

5) Aisa banoonga actor main yaaron

6) Ham hi jaanen ek torey manwa ki peer

7) Janamdin tujhko mubaraak ho

Today’s song is from the 1970 movie ‘Bachpan’.

As mentioned in the earlier posts under this series, ‘Naunihaal-1967’ was the first released movie of child artist Junior Mehmood.

He went on to act in many movies as a child artist then. He was the most loved child artist in those years of end-sixties to mid-seventies.

As a child artist Junior Mehmood achieved a ‘Superstar’ like status. He got to perform on many songs or rather many songs were picturised on him during those days.

We are going to enjoy one such song of Junior Mehmood as a child artist from the movie ‘Bachpan-1970’. The today’s wonderful entertaining song is performed by Junior Mehmood and other child artist including Sachin and Naeem (?) and many others.

This song is a different from his’ other songs as a child artist, because here he is not doing any mimicry of other actors or his guru, but in today’s song he is performing as a ‘girl’ or in a ‘female’ get-up.

In today’s song we see all the child artists (mentioned above) are singing and dancing in a police station where Sanjeev Kumar is in a lock-up. From the lyrics of this song we can guess that all these children have a plan to divert the attention of the on-duty police staff in their singing-dancing activities so that Sanjeev Kumar is able to escape from their custody.

The lyrics, music and singing of this song is very lively and entertaining to watch as Junior Mehmood, Sachin performs by lip syncing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice and lead other children in the performance.

In an interview with Zarina Wahab (available here) Junior Mehmood had mentioned this song as his most favourite song among all the songs picturised on him.

‘Bachpan’ was directed by K.P. Atma for ‘Atma Arts Universal, Bombay’. K.P. Atma co-produced this movie with K.H. Rao. It had Sanjeev Kumar, Master Sachin, Junior Mehmood, Shahid, Anwar Hussain, Mukri, Sunder, Joginder, Baldev Mehta, Keshto Mukherji, Aruna Irani, Sulochana Chatterjee, Tabassum, Pratima Devi, Baby Gayatri, Baby Guddi, Master Alankar, Naeem and Tanuja.

Story of this movie was written by K.P. Atma. Screenplay and dialogues were written by Raj Baldev Raj. Editing of this movie was done by Shivaji Awdhut.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.09.1970.

This movie had total six songs which were written by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, and P. Susheela were the playback singers for the songs in this movie.

Three songs from the movie ‘Bachpan-1970’ have been posted earlier on the blog. Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

“Five Rifles” (1974) was produced and directed by I.S. Johar. I think it was also written by I.S.Johar. Anyone who used to see the movies in the 70s will recall that the male actors – won’t call them protagonist or heroes- were look-alikes of Shashi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna; credited in the movie’s titles as Shahi Kapoor and Rakesh Khanna. The others in the cast were Ambika Johar (in a double role), Veena, D.K. Sapru, Murad, Kamal Kapoor (in one of his many videshi, police commissioner acts), Anil Johar, Satyadeep etc. and I.S. Johar, of course. The songs of the movie were written by Rajinder Krishan and Indeevar. The movie had five songs and the blog has the following two of them:-

Song Date of post
Jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabi 30 june 2009
Tera husn allah allah tera roop raam raam 6 June 2018

Avinashji has written a lot of details, about the film, in this post

I don’t recall if I had seen this movie at the time of its release (maybe I had) but saw the movie recently and felt that it spoke about too many things. I.S. Johar had ‘Nashabandi’ (prohibition on sale of liquor), ‘Nasbandi’ (family planning movement of the 70s), freedom-struggle, corrupt ‘Senapati’ of some unnamed kingdom who helps the foreign ruler dethrone the Maharaja etc. all in the story of this movie. Additionally, there was an extended climax which went from the plains to the snow-capped hills in North India with snowmobiles etc. Plus all the gorillas/apes that kept popping here-there-everywhere through the movie. And weird cars which split from the middle, suddenly become flying cars, and amphibians. Just too many things in one movie for the audience to digest; in addition to the two look-alikes and a non-acting heroine. God, I sat through it to see what the song-and-dance was all about. Oh I forgot, a song from “Johar Mehmood in Goa” (1965) was used in the scene where the Apes helping the freedom-fighters are being escorted to Jail.

Today we are having a song where we see Inder Sen Johar (read somewhere that he was Inderjeet Singh Johar, whichever is correct) disguised as a dancer out to hoodwink the ‘Daaroga’ and breaking into a mujra singing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. There is another girl dancing in a black dress outwitting the hawaldars who have accompanied the Daaroga.

I.S. Johar, born on 16th february 1920, was an M.A. in Economics & Politics and before completing LLB. He was born in modern day Pakistan, got stuck in Patiala at the time of partition and could never return. He made his debut in Bollywood in 1949 and also appeared in a few international projects. He was seen in comic roles with tongue-in-cheek dialogues and did serious roles too with subtle ironic or frankly sarcastic jibes at Indian customs, mores, superstitions and institutions. It is 38 years since his passing and 10th March is his anniversary.

The movie had Jeetedra,Mumtaz, Prem Chopra, K.N.Singh, Naaz, Asit Sen, Tun tun, Pravin Paul, Aruna Irani, Bobby, Jagdeep,Prabhakar Reddy, Ananda Mohan, Puranik, Premkumar, J.N.Anand, Kiran, Joshi, Nadir, Mamajee, Akhtar, Pande, Pratibha, Raja Rao, Brahm Bhardwaj etc in it. The movie also had guest appearances by Agha, Lata Arora, Master Sachin, Jayadev and club dancer Lakshmi.

“Himmat”(1970) had seven songs in it. Five songs have been covered so far.

Here is the sixth song from the movie.

The song is sung by Rafi. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

From the picturisation, one can see that Mumtaz is dressed as a boy and has befriended Jeetendra. The movie watchers can easy see through the disguise of Mumtaz but our hero cannot. But he does feel like this new friend of his would be better off as a girl. In this song he expresses his feelings (while teasing Mumtaz) what he would have done had “he” been a “she”.

This song was quite a popular song of its time. I was aware of the song but I did not know the details of this song. It is only today (53 years later) that I have become aware of the details of the song that were sent to me by Prakashchandra alongwith the lyrics of the song.

Lyrics of the audio version are longer than the picturised version.

Hullo Atuldom

The blog has songs from “Shri 420” (1955), “Shrimati 420” (1956) & “Ustaad 420” (1969) – from which “Shrimati 420” is one short from being YYIIPPEEEED. Hindi films have a few more ‘420’ (char sau bees). There is a “Khiladi 420” which came in 2000 & “Chachi 420” which released in 1997. These are the 420/s that I know of, there may be one or two more films with ‘420’ in their title.

We shall focus on “Chachi 420” today, on the occasion of Kamal Haasan’s birthday. He is turning 69. He was born in a Tamil Iyengar family to a lawyer-freedom fighter father & homemaker mother. Two of his brothers- Charuhasan & Chandrahasan have also acted in Tamil films. Kamal’s nieces Anu Hasan & Suhaasini are also actresses as also his own daughters Akshara & Shruti. He was married to Bharat Natyam danseuse Vani Ganapathy and then Sarika Thakur (of Hindi Films fame). All-in-all a family of entertainers.

Kamal Haasan has also produced & directed films, has hosted a few reality shows on TV in addition to being an actor in Tamil (his base language), Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada & also Bengali. He has a huge fan following all over South India and it is very normal to see huge cut-outs of him whenever a film of his is due to release. There are fans of his among the film-fraternity too & many of them have accepted mini to maxi roles just to be in the same frame as him. “Hey Ram!” (2000) is a case in point where Shahrukh Khan & Rani Mukherjee had small roles; even Hema Malini, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri were there in that film. He had also appeared in a Silent Film – “Pushpak” in 1987 which also had Tinnu Anand, Farida Jalal, Amala etc in the cast. It was a successful entertainer. He has experimented playing a variety of characters like a Dwarf in ‘Appu Raja’ (original Tamil title- ‘Apoorva Sagodharargal’), 4 lookalike brothers separated at birth in ‘Michael Madan Kama Rajan’ & 10 varied characters in ‘Dasaavatharam’.

“Chachi 420” was a film which had him in the role of ‘gentle lady’ for nearly half the film. It was co-written, produced & directed by Kamal Haasan. It starred Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Paresh Rawal, Johnny Walker along with Ayesha Jhulka (I think it was a guest appearance). Tabu was the heroine and Fatima Sana Shaikh was the child star. (Fatima played Geeta Phogat in the 2016 released “Dangal”.)

The film was a remake of Kamal Haasan’s 1996 released Tamil film “Avvai Shanmughi” which itself was inspired by “Mrs Doubtfire” (1993). This sentence will give the followers of the blog an idea about the movie.

For those who haven’t seen ‘Mrs Doubtfire’ or ‘Avvai Shanmughi’ or ‘Chachi 420’ here is the synopsis :-

“Wealthy Janki (Tabu) falls in love with poor Jaiprakash (Kamal Haasan), much to the displeasure of her parents, and ends up getting married, and living with her husband. She subsequently gives birth to a daughter. Differences surface between the couple, and Janki leaves Jaiprakash and moves back in with her parents. Jaiprakash wants to see his daughter, but is prevented by Durgaprasad (Amrish Puri), Janki’s dad, so he assumes the guise of a woman, calls himself Laxmi, and starts working as a nanny for his daughter. Complications arise when Durgaprasad gets attracted to Laxmi and wants to marry ‘her’.”

The dialogues by Gulzar were another highlight (imo) & the way they have been delivered- the film should be seen to enjoy that aspect. Vishal Bharadwaj was the music director & Gulzar wrote the songs.

“Macarena” a song by the Spanish pop duo Los del Rio was very popular in the early 1990s. It inspired a few Indian film makers & musicians too. “Chachi 420” also had a take-off on it . Today we shall have that song. It is filmed as “Karva Chauth” celebration song. Kamal Haasan sings for himself & Asha Bhonsle sings for Tabu (who had her birthday on 4th november. Belated wishes to her).

Let us enjoy the song – in all these years of hearing this song there are a lot of words which I haven’t deciphered specially at the start of the song. But, it is enjoyable.
